Coverage for Boats covers two main areas:

1. Liability insurance - Just as in car insurance, you can be sued for hurting someone or damaging someone's property in a boating accident. This coverage will pay for your legal defense and also pay for any damages awarded by a court or for amounts agreed to in an out of court settlement. This coverage can be enhanced with coverage for medical expenses that does not require a lawsuit, fuel spills and coverage for sports activities such as water skiing.
2. Physical Damage to your Boat - if your boat is damaged in a boating accident or damaged while docked (vandalized or catches fire); a boat policy can insure the boat itself for these damages along with any of your personal belongings and other boating equipment.

Often, people do not think of personal watercraft items as boats, but they are and a boat policy is needed. There is some limited liability coverage for boats in the liability part of the standard homeowners policy, but the boats must be small and have very limited power.
